Opel is dropping the price of the Ampera by a whopping € 7600. I wonder how they do it. I don't belive that they found a way to drop production costs that much. So did they rip off the early adopters, or are they so desperate to sell some that they are selling at a loss. Also, did Chevy announce something similar for the Volt, or is this just Opel?

And it's still way more expensive than it should be.

They probably lose more money on them (unless Europe has the same tax incentives that the US does for electric vehicles) than the Volt over here.
The volt is already shockingly cheap (after tax breaks) for how much it should cost to make. I'm fairly sure the business does not profit off of them.

Yes, this weeks Motorweek ran a small blurb about the Volts price being dropped by $7000 USD.

They dropped the prices by $5000. There are still a lot of dealer level rebates to be found though.

I see quite a lot Amperas actually. Mostly because of those tax breaks, it's shockingly cheap to lease due to its low theoretical fuel consumption and thus theoretically low CO2 emissions. In reality I see all those tax loophole abusers drive their Prii and Ameras on the left lane overtaking everyone, driving very uneconomically and usually not charging them with electricity other than regenerative braking. The Ampera had a shockingly high market share of 0.54% in its first year (2012) here, which was higher than volume sellers like the Merc C-Class and Ford Mondeo (Fusion).

That's electrifying news. I wonder if GM actually sells more Amperas than Volts, because even where I live (Chicago, prime market for the Volt since its full of people in the city who also need to travel outside) I see a volt once in a blue moon.

Well, I'm only talking about the Netherlands here. Which is a country of 17 million people. From a volume perspective a market like the German, British or French market is much more interesting. Or, beyond Europe, the Chinese or Russian market.
